FOR BIRTHPARENTS

Adoption can be a good solution for an unplanned pregnancy. There are many couples and individuals who are hoping to adopt a child. A child placed in an adoptive home is loved and cherished. You will have a special place in the adoptive parents’ hearts for giving the child life and honoring them by entrusting that life to a family that you have especially chosen.

Today, more than ever before, birthparents have many options as they consider an adoption plan for their child.

You may choose to work with an adoption agency in placing your child or you may choose to retain an attorney to guide you with an "independent adoption." You have the right to choose the adoptive parents and meet them personally. After the adoptive placement, you can request letters and pictures from the adoptive family on a regularly scheduled basis. This contact can even be extended to include visitations if all parties are in agreement. An Adoption Agreement , outlining your requests, can be drafted between you and the adoptive parents that is legally binding in the State of Oregon.

Birthparents will not be responsible for any expenses related to the adoption. Adoptive parents will pay for your counsel whether it be with a social worker, adoption agency, or an attorney. Further, all medical costs not covered by insurance or the Oregon State Medical Assistance Plan, as well as room and board expenses for the time you are unable to work because of the pregnancy, are the responsibility of the adoptive parents.
